Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 devastated the Gulf Coast casinos. The storm destroyed or heavily damaged virtually every casino in Biloxi and Gulfport. The state legislature responded by allowing casinos to be rebuilt on land within 800 feet of the water, no longer requiring them to sit on floating barges. This change enabled the construction of modern, purpose-built resort facilities that opened from 2006 onward, including the current versions of the Golden Nugget Biloxi and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi.
